Injuries to the penis often cause anxiety. However, many men may feel ashamed to see a doctor when experiencing it. The causes of injuries to the penis vary, ranging from irritation to the skin of the penis to infection.
The penis can experience wounds of various shapes, colors and sizes. There are injuries to the penis that are accompanied by annoying pain, some are not felt anything.
Some wounds on the penis can be accompanied by itching, skin peeling, swelling, or discharge such as pus or blood. In general, the cause of injury to the penis can be divided into infection and non-infection.
Injury to the penis due to infection
Injury to the penis due to infection is mostly transmitted through physical contact during intercourse. While the rest, transmitted through indirect contact, for example due to using the same clothes or towels with sufferers of infection.
Some infectious diseases that can cause sores on the penis are:
Virus infection
The virus that most often causes injury to the penis is the herpes simplex virus (HSV). In general, there are two types of herpes viruses, namely HSV 1 and HSV 2. Both can cause injury to the penis, but research shows that 51% of penile injuries due to herpes virus infection are caused by HSV-2.
Wounds caused by HSV-2 infection usually feel sore, itchy, and can appear as a lump filled with clear fluid before rupture. Another virus that can also cause painful wounds to the penis is the Molluscum contagiosum virus.
Bacterial infection
Diseases caused by bacterial infections in the genitals most famous is the lion king or syphilis. In the same study as before, syphilis was the second leading cause of injury to the penis. The bacterium that causes this disease is Treponema pallidum. Sores caused by syphilis usually do not hurt.
Apart from syphilis, penile sores can also be caused by infection with the bacterium Haemophillus ducreyi in chancroid disease, Klebsiella granulomatis bacteria that cause granuloma inguinale, and Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria in lymphogranuloma venereum.
Fungal and parasitic infections
Examples are Candida fungal infections, or parasitic infections, such as scabies and lice in pubic hair. The most prominent symptom in fungal and parasitic infections is itching. Injuries to the penis can occur due to scratching.
Injuries to the penis due to non-infectious causes
Apart from infection, penile injuries can also occur due to non-communicable diseases, such as:
1. Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a form of autoimmune disease, where the immune system attacks the body's own skin cells. Psoriasis appears as thick reddish patches and white or silvery scales.
But in the genital area, psoriasis scales are usually less than in other body parts, due to the high humidity of the body in the genital area.
2. Eczema
Eczema is inflammation of the skin that can be triggered by exposure to irritative or allergic substances. Eczema usually looks dry and itchy, but it can also be a lump filled with fluid which then breaks and leaves a wound.
3. Lichen sclerosus
Lichen sclerosus is a rare skin disease. In men, this condition can cause paler colored patches from the surrounding skin (hypopigmentation), accompanied by sores that can leave scarring. These patches usually appear on the penis or skin around the anus.
4. Behcet's Syndrome
This is an autoimmune disease characterized by damage to arteries and veins. This disease can cause injuries in various parts of the body, including the penis.
5. Penile cancer
Although rare, penile cancer is a very serious condition. Symptoms can be a wound or a lump on the head of the penis that does not go away.
Treatment of wounds on the penis will be adjusted to the cause. For injuries to the penis caused by bacterial infections, treatment with antibiotics is needed from the doctor. As for penile lesions due to a viral infection, your doctor may provide antiviral treatment.
So that the cause of injury to the penis can be ascertained, sufferers are advised to consult a doctor first before using drugs or ointments that are sold freely. As long as there are wounds on the penis, it is advisable not to have sexual relations first until the cause of the injury is known and treated.
If the wound on the penis appears along with several other complaints, such as fever, pain when urinating or when ejaculating, foul smelling liquid or pus from the penis hole, immediately consult a doctor.
